It is always a pleasure to support local community theater, and you can do that at the Fort Bend Theatre where there is almost always something going on, from ballet to concerts to plays. Children’s productions are always an important part of the theater’s repertoire, and there is even a resident 18-and-under acting troupe. Perhaps your family would prefer to stretch their legs, and they can do so bowling at the AMF Stafford Lanes. Here you will find 32 lanes of traditional bowling, a pro shop, TV for viewing sports events, arcade games, and billiards tables. There is a restaurant onsite as well. If you want to stay active, then spend some time over at the 16-acre Stafford City Park, the city’s largest park, which includes baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, a pavilion, playground equipment, picnic benches, and soccer fields. Bring a picnic, go for a jog, or just watch other people exercising! While you are downtown, take a stroll through the Margaret Havens Historical Memorial Garden, located next to Stafford City Hall. Enjoy its rose garden, benches, and fountain; you may even catch a wedding there.
Stafford is known as a bedroom community for Houston, and there is no reason not to include some of the bigger city’s attractions in your itinerary. Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts is a must-see. Housed in two buildings, you will see Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, Baroque and Renaissance art, African tribal art, a sculpture garden and native art from a plethora of different countries. Watch for ongoing gallery talks and tours, film series and various lectures. Try to visit on Thursdays, when admission is free. Now that you have focused on art appreciation, it is time to check out the Houston Museum of Natural Science where you will find mineral specimens, a dinosaur skeleton, space-station models, a planetarium, an IMAX theater and even a six-story butterfly center (if you are very still and quiet, they will come and land on you!).
